Short Message Service (SMS) is a communication service where typically cell phones communicate via 140 to 160 characters of text. While SMS originated as a GSM (Global System for Mobile) standard, it's popularity has spread to carriers whose networks are based on the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) standard. SMS communications are commonly referred to as text messages. Hundreds of billions of text messages are sent out each year.

SMS is most typically used for cell phones to communicate with other cell phones, but there are exceptions. Send Texter is an example of one such exception. Send Texter uses an SMS server to send messages to a cell phone. In this case, the application can't receive responses. You probably don't want to talk to a computer too much, anyway.

Creating a text message from a cellphone often is done in either ways: via T-9 entry or a small thumb keyboard. T-9 entry is a done with the numbers 0-9, plus the * and the # key. Pressing a key multiple times cycles through the letters of the alphabet. Entry using a small thumb keyboard is easier for those new to creating text messages since it only requires one keypress to add most letters. Fortunately users of Send Texter can use a standard keyboard.
